He opposed the Anglican reform, but he was also a leader of the CIRCLE OF THE SPIRITUALS trying to soften the Catholic position against the Protestants
Among the supporters of the Circle there were also Vittoria Colonna and Michelangelo
Reginald Pole came close to becoming pope in 1550 (he lacked only one vote) and in 1555, but the election of the conservative Pope Paul IV Carafa (1555/59) put a permanent end to his hopes of reform
