FOUNTAIN OF PIAZZA DELLA MADONNA DEI MONTI

FONTANA DI PIAZZA DELLA MADONNA DEI MONTI
1588/89 project by Giacomo Della Porta (1533/1602) executed by Battista Rusconi for Pope Sixtus V Peretti (1585/90)
The steps were built in 1595 by Girolamo De Rossi
It was restored in 1680 for Innocent XI Odescalchi (1676/89), in 1880 and in 1997 the same year in which the square became pedestrian
Also known as FONTANA DEI CATECUMENI (Fountain of the Catechumens) due to the nearby college for youth converted to Catholicism
An urban legend has it that the composer Ottorino Respighi used to pass time during the night by the fountain in order to find inspiration for his symphonic poem "The Fountains of Rome"
