It is dedicated to the martyr Theodore, a Roman Legionary, killed in Turkey being beaten with rods, tormented with steel combs and then burned alive, fully deserving the title of Megalomartyr
In the 1500s here was kept the Bronze She-Wolf of the Capitoline Hill
The Titulus S. Theodori was reestablished on December 2, 1959 by Giovanni XXIII Roncalli (1958/63)

Giovanni Paolo II (1978/2005) granted the use of the Church to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and to the Greek Orthodox community in Rome, from July 1, 2004, to the presence of Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople
