ARCH OF "JANUS"

ARCO DI "GIANO"
IV century AD. Maybe the real ancient name was ARCUS COSTANTINI in honor of Constantine (306/337) or perhaps his son Constantius II (337/361)
Ianus means covered walkway with four entrances
On the keystones ruined figures of Rome and Juno sitting, and Minerva and Ceres standing
Fragments of the dedicatory inscription are inside the church of S. Giorgio in Velabro, in the façade and in the porch
The Vicus Tuscus passed under the arch, directed to the Forum
In the Middle Ages the Frangipane family built a small fortress over the arch
