AREA CANDIDI

AREA CANDIDI
Huge complex destroyed in the eighteenth century but identified from fragments of the Forma Urbis, the Severan marble plan of Rome
Remains were found with the opening of Via Balbo in 1888
Arcade platform occupied by gardens with a round building at the center. It may have belonged to a Tiberius Iulius Candidus in the first half of the second century AD and then incorporated into the PALATIUM DECII of Decius (249/251), where the martyrdom of St. Lawrence took place, according to tradition
Here archeologists found "Two statues of Hellenistic poets sitting", Posidippus and maybe Plautus or Menander now in the Vatican Museums in the Galleria delle Statue
