ARCH OF SIXTUS V

ARCO DI SISTO V
Three arches, in blocks of lava stone with travertine inlays, at the point where the Felice Aqueduct spanned the road leading to the two churches of S. Maria Maggiore and S. Maria degli Angeli, as it is written in one of the two inscriptions
It is also called the ARCH OF THE PEARS from the coat of arms of Sixtus V Peretti (1585/90)
The inscription reads that the Pope had made at his own expense the Felice Aqueduct, underground for 13 miles and on arches for 7 miles
