The official name of the institution is ACADEMIA BELGICA and the foundation dates back to 1930, for the marriage of Princess Marie-José with Prince Umberto of Savoy
It incorporated the Belgian Historical Institute in Rome (ISBR), founded in 1902, and the National Foundation Princess Marie-José (FPMJ) which had been founded shortly before
The Academy has also taken part in archaeological research, through excavations conducted in Alba Fucens, Abruzzo and Ordona in Puglia
The Academy includes a large LIBRARY specializing in history, art history and archeology, history of religion and science: of the about 80,000 volumes, 70% fall in these disciplines
