FOUNTAIN OF PIAZZA S. MARIA IN TRASTEVERE

FONTANA DI PIAZZA S. MARIA IN TRASTEVERE
Ancient origin, maybe late eighth century for Adriano I (772/795)
It was certainly here in 1471
Restorations 1498 and 1606
Rebuilt in 1659 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598/1680), who moved it where it is now feeding it with the Acqua Paola aqueduct
In 1692 Carlo Fontana (1634/1714) extended the tank and replaced the previous four double shells designed by Bernini with four other larger shells
Restoration in 1873 with the substitution of travertine with gray marble and with the addition of four steps to the original three
