FOUNTAINS OF PIAZZA FARNESE

FONTANE DI PIAZZA FARNESE
1626 Girolamo Rainaldi (1570/1655)
Commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese after the donation for his palace of a large amount of the daily flow from the Acqua Paola aqueduct by Gregory XV Ludovisi (1621/23)
"Ancient tubs" of Egyptian granite, maybe from the Baths of Caracalla
The first tub was already at the center of the square in mid-1500, also used as a secure location for the Farnese family who was present during the bull fights that were held in the square
The second tub was moved there in about 1580 from Piazza S. Marco where it had been placed, together the first tub, more than a century before
The weekly horses market used to be hold in the square
