GENAZZANO

Altitude 375 m (1,230 feet). 5,500 abitanti

Mentioned in the sources for the first time at the beginning of the eleventh century

It was a feud of the Colonna family for a long time

Here was born Pope Martin V Colonna (1417/31)

At the time of Pope Alexander VI Borgia (1492/1503) the town was property of his son Cesare Borgia

Here lived and died Brancaleone, the knight who led Italians to victory in the Challenge of Barletta in 1503 against French knights

Castello Colonna

Castle of the Colonna Family

Built in the Middle Ages and rebuilt in the fifteenth century by Oddone Colonna

It was enlarged by the Borgia family and rebuilt in the Baroque period

Façade on the courtyard and fountain by Antonio Del Grande (about 1625/79)

It was purchased in 1979 by the City of Genazzano who used it in 2000 as POLO INTERNAZIONALE D’ARTE CONTEMPORANEA (International Centre of Contemporary Art)

NYMPHAEUM

Built in the sixteenth century. Attributed to Donato Bramante (1444/1514)

It was built in the Old Garden of the castle to be used during plays

Renovated in the eighteenth century

On the right side sculpture "St. Paul" of the fifteenth century

In the convent MUSEUM with vestments, reliquaries, holy water stoup with a statue of St. John the Baptist of the sixteenth century and several paintings of the nineteenth century
